Love-Bomb conviction shakes faith in justice
Mountain Lake Minnesota. Marie Haala a 29 year old science teacher was convicted Nov 21 by a U S district court jury in Oklahoma City of sending a mail bomb to Beverly Oines wife of her lover Ronald Oines. Oines was slightly injured when the bomb malfunctioned Haala admitted involvement with Oines but said she did not send the bomb. The device mailed June 25 was postmarked St Joseph Missouri Haala while in graduate school at Cedar Falls Iowa at the time said she thought it a practical joke when arrested by postal authorities in Cedar Falls She said the arrest and ensuing events led her to doubt the American justice system and the presumption of innocence. She awaits sentencing and hopes for a suspended sentence. Mountain Lake residents rallied to her defense while the school board acted to dismiss her under a felony conviction rule. Haala weighs appealing and fighting the dismissal saying she can bounce back.
