Steelworkers to pick new union leader at Las Vegas convention
At the United Steelworkers convention in Las Vegas the aging leader Abel announced structural changes and a push to include black members in upper ranks. He proposed adding a vice presidency and sharing secretary treasurer duties, while denying naming any candidate. John 8 Johns withdrew and backed Lloyd McBride as the race narrowed. Sadlowski remains a likely challenger, with Carter and Mondale expected to receive early convention endorsements. John 8 Johns backed McBride and hinted at Sadlowski's threat to unity.
