Grain Use Forecast Dials Back As Feed Prices Rise
The USDA forecast for 1975 76 feed grain use drops amid weather damage to crops and strong export demand. It projects 3.97 to 4.27 billion bushels for domestic use with 88 percent to animals, while end of season stocks are cut. Officials warn prices depend on meat producer response and weather, as livestock profits improve but cattle and hog output may stay cautious.

Americans to eat less food this year says USDA
The Agriculture Department now predicts lower per capita food consumption for 1975, mainly in live stock products. Pork and poultry lead the decline, with meat prices spiking due to drought and tight feeds. Overall food price increases remain high, and the per person consumption index may fall to about 100.96 from 102.5 last year.

Grass Waterways Make For Good Conservation
Dennis Shirk of the Soil Conservation Service says grassed waterways form the foundation of soil and water conservation. Audrain Soil District owners built 148 acres of waterways last year to divert runoff to safe outlets, using fescue and seed, lime, fertilizer, and a cover crop to protect soil. The design aims to handle a 10 year storm and reduce maintenance costs with proper planning this fall. Palm oil imports in 1975 rise sharply. edible use dominates, with 88 percent in shortening. The Soil Conservation Service offers help in planning and staking waterways as an initial conservation step.

No Set Aside For ASCS Crop Programs Announced
Secretary Earl L. Butz announced no set aside requirements for the 1976 feed grain and wheat programs as Audrain ASCS reports. Producers are not urged to remove cropland next year despite expected record corn and wheat yields due to strong export demand. Farmers may substitute non conserving or conserving crops used for hay or grazing to preserve their wheat and feed grain allotments. Further program provisions and 1975 data review results will be announced later.

Stop Erosion With Proper Seed Beds
Farmers should prepare erosion resistant seed beds before alfalfa and grasses. University of Missouri Columbia researchers report reduced erosion from heavy fall rain using these beds versus conventionally prepared plots. Remove straw, work stubble into top 4 to 5 inches, apply lime or fertilizer, then disk or chiseling, harrow, and roll. Use a modified grain drill for legumes with phosphate. grasses need phosphate and nitrogen. Remove weeds on old pastures before dishing and chiseling. avoid loose residue to ease harrowing and drilling. Grass roots torn by disking help prevent erosion.
