Mayor Agrees to State Control of NYC Budget
New York AP reports Mayor Abraham D. Beame agreed to cede major fiscal controls to the state in exchange for a large loan package to avert city default. A three member panel of Carey Beame Levitt will oversee revenue estimates while state officials issue low interest securities and widen MAC borrowing to stabilize finances. Missouri Insurance Regulation Proposals Face Challenge
Missouri officials and industry representatives clashed over proposed credit life insurance rules. Dueling claims centered on whether the state has authority to set maximum premiums and commissions, with critics urging legislative backing while supporting some limits such as a 75 cent per $100 ceiling. Proponents say the rules curb discrimination in credit tied insurance and prevent price distortions, though industry figures warn of administrative burdens and timing challenges for Sept. 15 implementation.
