Solar Bin Uses Sun to Dry Grain in SD Field Test
Researchers from South Dakota State University and Sioux Steel Company created a solar powered grain drying bin. The unit is a standard round steel dryer with two thirds of its exterior coated to act as a solar collector. It replaces LP gas drying, cutting cost from about 9-10 cents to 1.2 cents per bushel, saving roughly $600 per 8,000 bushels.

Worthless Stalks Converted To Feed
Missouri researchers convert corn stover into cow and sheep feed by grinding, oxidizing with hypochlorite, then treating with ammonium hydroxide to raise crude protein from 4-5% to 18-19% and improve digestibility. They hope to apply the method to straw and test feeds in animals, not just lab tests.
