Justice Dept Drops Wallace Probe In Alabama
The Justice Department junked its investigation into alleged corruption in Gov. George C. Wallace’s Alabama administration for lack of evidence. A federal grand jury in Montgomery will reconvene Sept. 7 to close the probe and possibly return tax indictments related to Seymore Trammell, Wallace’s former top aide. The probe had touched on a $110,000 loan, $25,000 in campaign donations listed as textbook firm expenses, and a $3,000 pool built for Trammell, but officials cited insufficient evidence or lack of federal violations.
