NASA named Dr. Harrison H. Schmitt, a Harvard-trained geologist and Apollo 15 backup lunar module pilot, as part of the Apollo 17 crew led by Navy Captain Eugene A. Cernan. The choice reflects scientific input over pilot-dominant selections, with Descartes region exploration planned for Apollo 16 successors and Schmitt joining mission veteran crews amid ongoing Space Agency discussions. Backup pilots from Apollo 15 and shifting plans for Apollo 14 era crews underscore the tension between science and piloting experience in NASA’s moon program.
