Controls End as Inflation Surges and Policy Fails
AP Business analyst John Caniff reports that peacetime wage and price controls expire amid the steepest 16 year drop in economic activity and inflation at its highest since 1951. First quarter GDP falls 5.8 percent while prices rise 10.8 percent overall and 14 percent for consumers. Interest rates climb, signaling monetary policy struggles as firms keep expansion plans. Economists debate whether controls succeeded or merely delayed inflation, noting oil and agricultural gains and a fading global boom.
