Chrysler Corp posts first quarter net earnings of 1.6 million, down 98 percent from 89.8 million a year earlier amid world gasoline shortages and inflation. Sales reach 2.7 billion, down 7 percent, with 19 percent U.S. market share but higher costs prompting calls for further price increases.

Police say they busted a $189 million-a-year gambling ring with 31 arrests in coordinated raids on wire rooms across New York City. The operation took bets on horse racing and sports, grossing more than $518,000 daily, about one fifth of the city’s Offtrack Betting Corp activity. Fifteen targets were in Brooklyn, three in Queens, one in the Bronx, and one in Staten Island.

Princeton AP reports the latest Gallup Poll from April 12 to 15 finds 30 percent approve Congress, 47 percent disapprove, with 23 percent undecided. Nixon is approved by 25 percent, disapproved by 62 percent, and 13 percent have no opinion. Republicans favor Nixon more than Democrats and independents.

London AP report states Capt Mark Phillips, husband of Princess Anne, faces cruelty accusations from Mrs Jeane Pyke after watching him ride Columbus to victory at the Badminton Horse Trials. She claims the Protection of Animals act could be violated by terrifying an animal. Buckingham Palace had no comment.
