Fed Cattle Prices May Run Higher in Spring Outlook

The Agriculture Department notes prices for fed cattle may rise above 1970 levels. February Omaha steer prices stood at 32.25 per cwt, up about 3 from a year earlier, then slipped to 31.60 by mid March. Spring and summer projections show prices near or above April-June 1970 levels, with hog slaughter and seasonal trends shaping the outlook. Hog prices around 17.50 per cwt are expected to rise through summer, peaking a few dollars below last July’s 25.40.

More Farmers Getting High Subsidies

Washington AP. Agriculture Secretary Clifford W. Hardin says expectations rise for more farmers receiving 30 000 to 40 000 in subsidies this year due to a new 55 000 payment limit to be strictly enforced. He notes the law allows splitting cotton allotments under certain conditions and would spread large corporate farms into smaller units. Last year several farmers, mostly big cotton growers, received over 500 000 each.

Set aside land is conserved and not harvested or grazed from April 1 to August 31 to meet Wheat or Feed Grain Program requirements. In emergencies, a producer may harvest and store hay from the higher of 25 percent or 25 acres of set aside for later use, baled and stored until the County ASC Committee approves its release. County ASC approval is required.
