Proxmire Would End 15 Agencies

Sen. William Proxmire urged abolishing the Interstate Commerce Commission and 14 other agencies as wasteful. He argued many agencies exist to satisfy Congress’s habit of creating new bodies, and some could have duties moved to existing offices. Also cited were renegotiation, civil defense, CIA, SBA, and Overseas Private Investment Corp as examples of targets. In Taos, N M an autopsy on a decomposed body showed a strangulation death of Nancy Verquer, 24, missing since December. Her husband Charles Verquer was held in Missouri on a fugitive warrant. The body’s иденtification awaited dental records.

Nixon Granted 60 Day Tax Return Extension

President Nixon, facing 467000 dollars in back taxes and interest, won a 60 day extension of the April 15 filing deadline for his 1973 tax return. White House aides cited the extension as a standard time request to absorb the impact of back tax rulings on the 1973 return. The IRS and a joint Taxation committee ruled Nixon owed back taxes for 1969 through 1972, disallowing deductions for gifts of vice presidential papers and some real estate. Nixon said he would pay.
