Study May Bring Revision of Federal Aid Formulas

Washington AP reports a federal state local commission suggests federal aid formulas may need revision. It finds tax burdens vary by state with industrialized Northeast and Midwest bearing heavier burdens, though it stops short of wholesale changes. The panel notes possible benefits of a hands off policy, and classifies states into four quadrants from high and rising to low and falling.

High Winds Spark Northeast Missouri Fires

High winds and rough terrain hampered efforts as two fires burned 500 acres of pasture and woodland in northeast Missouri. Thousand Hills State Park blaze near Kirksville leveled 105 acres and was controlled by 1:15 pm, while a La Plata fire burned about 350 acres and was under control by 9:30 pm. No injuries were reported. Volunteers and National Guard assisted, with inmates from Moberly prison helping La Plata. Authorities attributed Thousand Hills ignition to an unattended campfire and La Plata rekindling to strong winds from a previous fire.
