High Winds Fan Woodland and Pasture Fires in Missouri

High winds and rugged terrain hindered firefighting on two northeast Missouri blazes that destroyed about 500 acres of pasture and woodland. Thousand Hills State Park fire near Kirksville leveled 105 acres and was controlled by 1:15 pm, while a La Plata blaze burned 350 acres and was controlled by 9:30 pm. No injuries reported. volunteers aided and National Guard helped at La Plata. Officials expected both fires to burn out. The Thousand Hills fire likely started from an unattended campfire, and La Plata’s blaze rekindled by wind after a previous Saturday fire near the Santa Fe railroad tracks possibly caused by a passing train.
