Freeway tax bill dies in House Transportation Committee
A bill by Rep. Lela Steffey to bypass voters and let the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors levy up to a half cent for freeway construction died Tuesday for lack of support in the House Transportation Committee. Steffey said the climate is not right to pursue it and urged public votes on such taxes. The measure would have expanded county tax authority while critics warned MAG’s planning roles hinder voter support. The panel will hear more freeway related bills next week.
