Mexican president urges rebels to negotiate amid amnesty end
President Carlos Salinas on Sunday pressed Chiapas rebels to seek peace as the four day amnesty offer expires at 11 am. He warned that any violence after the period would lose amnesty and reaffirmed government efforts toward dialogue, reconciliation, and returning to communities. Manuel Camacho Solis said talks channels are open, while 14,000 troops remain in Chiapas amid a deadly uprising that began January 1.

Italy dissolves Parliament but keeps premier Ciampi in place
In Rome, Italy's president dissolved Parliament and refused Premier Carlo Ciampi's resignation, asking him to stay until elections to replace the scandal scarred legislature. Elections date to be announced by the government. Ciampi offered to resign earlier, amid widespread corruption probes among MPs. The move ushers in expectations that opposition and reform parties could gain, potentially sweeping out Christian Democrats and Socialists.
