Tucson hosts the Arizona Press Association for its eighth annual gathering with busy sessions and a grand banquet at Hotel Hall. Col J A Black Col J A Breathitt and Mayor H Buehman led hospitality as editors toured the University and Southern Pacific shops before a formal toast-filled evening praising Cuban liberty and local Tucson hospitality.
February clearings indicate record volume in 1898, with strong grain exports and rising prices in hay and fruit. Citrus ships and lemon plantings boost eastern demand, while coastal demand lags. Bank clearings rise. retail activity solid, but merchandise failures toll set at twenty with liabilities of 67000 and assets 45000.
Wallace Macdonald reports Agnes Macdonald was killed not by an axe but likely suffocated with a pillow and bedclothes. The murder weapon, an axe used to break a window, was found on the floor. The Southern Pacific Company has finished laying twenty miles of heavy 62 and 75 pound rails from Lordsburg to El Paso. The improvement strengthens the roadbed and enhances safety. Benson and Bowie yards are being doubled in capacity to meet rising demand.
