Cannon Ball Train Robbery Near Shady Point

The Cannon Ball southbound train No. 4 was held up at 3:45 a.m. near Shady Point by three to four bandits. They disabled the air hose, forced crew to assist, and ran the engine with dynamite as they searched cars. They secured $5 from the mail clerk and a single registered letter, delaying the train about one hour fifty minutes. Engineer H. H. Rodman and Fireman C. Penrod aided operations under threat, with No. 6 as a robber.

Robbers Caught After Lively Run and Shootout

After a daytime holdup, Inspector Hook and Spade Lee chased two robbers through brush near Poteau. A running fight lasted about a mile and a half before Burns and Tate surrendered. Peterson denied involvement. Burns, Irish. Tate, Kentucky. Peterson, Swedish.

P. & G. Station Boss Robbed of Receipts

Night operator C. M. Spotwell at Spiro on the Kansas City Pittsburg and Gulf stole about $400 in day receipts and fled yesterday morning. He had only two weeks on the job, from Hornbeck, La, and devised a ruse to halt a train near St Smith. Spotwell, about 35, 150 pounds, fair complexion, no beard, previously arrested for a shooting in St. Louis. Suspected to have gone to Louisiana. Miners Held Over After Preliminary Hearing

In the Ganet mines near Shady two workers were taken to Cameron and jailed. A preliminary hearing was held yesterday and they were bound over to await grand jury action.

Report On Unconfirmed Soldier Death Rumor

Report states Thomas Chamberlain, said to have served in the Second Arkansas Volunteers and Fifth Regulars, died in the Philippines. Dr. Reese reports no enlistment or death record. Mrs. Chamberlain seeks news. Chamerlain’s Pain Balm is advertised by F C Savage as a relief remedy.

Accident Wounds Sheriff In Wild West Rifle Incident

Friday night Sheriff Johnson and Deputy Marshal Jones halted at Hill's fruit stand and seized a two caliber Winchester. While marching toward the suspect along the railroad they paused with the gun’s muzzle on Johnson’s foot and the weapon discharged, wounding him on the third toe. The sheriff was treated in court, and Deputy Cunningham pursued the suspect but arrived too late.

Queer mineral formation at Edison mine raises curiosity

Edison mine six miles south of town reports a strange metal formation. Owners include W. J. Boyer H. J. Radcliffe C. H. Thompson and J. F. de Berry of Plattsburg Mo. Mack Gee reports about one hundred bright metal buttons found in black rock with white quartz. No ore test yet.

Bitten by Three Snakes at Rich Mountain

J B Wright a 21 year old section hand at Rich Mountain was bitten on the hand by a poisonous snake around 11 am last Thursday. He was taken on train No 4 in a delirious state and treated by Dr Davis and Webb. He recovered enough to return home in Scott county though still suffers. Wright recalls three prior snake bites claiming a diamond rattlesnake and a ground rattlesnake were involved and says this was the most serious. Their Punishment Great Enough. The Hudgins brothers once stole mules in Dallas. one killed the animals to flee and was later jailed in Leavenworth. They were pardoned by President McKinley to take effect July 1900. The pardon reached Leavenworth officials who said Will Shelby, accused of the old crime, is insane. his brother Frank was pardoned to care for him, so the case will be dropped.
