Major Edgar Jadwin and Sergeant William Kent recruited twelve men in the city for the 3rd regiment United States Volunteer Engineers, filling Arkansas quota and four over. Names listed include M. The Spring Amateur Musical Club presents Red Riding Hood at the opera house Friday night July 29 with top local vocal talent and extensive rehearsals promising a fine show. Hudgins Bros who held the prior contract to ban certain steel cages used in the county jail from Hot Springs to Dallas have been awarded the contract to relocate them from Dallas to Mena. The cages weigh about 11 000 pounds and the work will begin soon.
Vale the counterfeiter, arrested with the Weihunt boy weeks ago and who broke jail, was recaptured in the Territory Sunday. He was brought to town Monday and sent to Ft. Smith to await trial. The Star invites votes for a hundred dollar scholarship to the Mena College and Conservatory of Music. Voters must clip Star copies with their chosen candidate name and send or bring them to the Star office. A panel will count the ballots and announce the winner when the final count is made on September 15.
Mt Mena reports a thriving summer retreat as every room in the hotel and cottages is occupied. Guests praise the climate scenery and attentive service by host Gillis at Hotel Wilhelming. Eleven cottages and a row of tents provide ample accommodation and a deluxe dining room impresses visitors. The bungalow built by J B Buchannan of Texarkana costs 1200 dollars with veranda views. Families note health improvements and weight gain from the location as financiers plan sales of refreshment stand sites. A large crowd attended a Wednesday night firemen's ice cream social and literary program at Janssen party house in Toledo. The Port Arthur Route band played, a mock fire was started and extinguished by five boys earning cheers. Mayor Whayoe opened the program, with speeches by Col. Byers and readings by local women. Proceeds reached $30 with about $10 covering expenses. The piece also includes a pasted testimonial for Hall's Catarrh Cure and local ads for hats and medicines.
