Prep Archie Arnold writes from England about crossing the pond, submarine action near a torpedoed ship, and convoy life. He describes Edinburgh leave, pay, and rough train travel from Regina, plus Allied advances and a wary view of the war. He longs for home comforts and wonders about France and Metz.
Beattie residents report visits and departures including Mrs F Dafoe and family traveling to Saskatoon before settling in Prince Albert. A five man crew arrived to build a new station with completion hoped for in November. Death of H Newman of Melfort noted with high regard. Mrs R Mann returned from Lady Minto hospital where daughter recovered from appendicitis and is improving. A McMichael adds a house extension on Beatty farm. J Pearson Co. contracted. North Canada Co. supplying materials. J H Lofstrom bought a Titan 15 30 tractor from LH C dealer at Beatty. Mc Fayden delivered the outfit. A Johnson and brother Gus visited Saskatoon for threshing outfit repairs. C Poole drove to Prince Albert due to lumber yard shortage. J Gherman and family visited R Nacht in Beatty. John McGee of Canada West Grain Co. visited Beatty on business. Wm Herod digs wells to ease water shortage. Box social and dance set for Friday night October 25. threshing finished so turnout may be better. Annie Holmberg under care at Prince Albert hospital. Frank Dafoe promoted to lead North Canada Lumber Co. yards in Prince Albert. beloved by locals and praised for fair dealings. Lady Minto donation list includes public school four bushels of potatoes and 3 dozen eggs for Thanksgiving.
Herbert Sawley and George Sawley of Lac Vert hailed for promotion and gallantry in WWI. Herbert trained in Britain, served in Royal North West Mounted Police, went overseas as a lieutenant in 1916, rose to captain, was wounded, returned to Canada, and offered service again for Siberia. George Sawley, enlisted in Manitoba cavalry, served over two years in France, promoted to officer after a commendation from Lt. Col. C C Harbottle, addressed to his mother Mrs. Erwin.
Mr and Mrs D McDonald of Silver Park have received a letter from the OC of Robert McDonald s battery detailing his death east of Amiens on August 8 when his unit supported cavalry. He was hit on the head in machine gun fire, was treated at a dressing station, and died shortly after.
The Older Girls Conference for Northern Saskatchewan will be held in Melfort from October 25 to 27 with delegates from Regina Swift Current Moose Jaw Saskatoon Weyburn North Battleford and Shellbrook eligible. Leaders are urged and a registration fee applies for out of town attendees with a local option for in town participants.
The pupils performed a Saturday recital with parents in attendance. The program included marches, waltzes, duets, and solos by named performers such as Viola Reese, Maggie Shdown, Pearl and Angela Whittig, Jessie Conyers, and others. An upcoming Monday program titled On The Sea and in the Air will follow in the town hall with 35 and 20 cent admission.
Grace Pearl Cameron and Roy McLean were married at the Cameron residence on Mc Leod Avenue in a ceremony conducted by Rev. Young of Tisdale. Bridesmaid Ellie McLean assisted as the wedding party traveled to Watrous for a honeymoon trip to Edmonton and Banff before returning to Pathlow to reside.
On Saturday October 12 at St Matthews Church in Tisdale Albert Henry Bowden and Alice Florence Gates were united in marriage by Canon Clarke of Melfort.
Rev. C. Barnes notes that $236.50 has been received from boys who pledged to earn and give $10 to the fund. Twenty four boys have not yet fulfilled their promise and the law remains open until October.
Rain slowed fall plowing in Ratner district while threshing progresses and yields dip where the July frost hit. Wheat yields range 25 to 40 bushels per acre in Teddington. oats and barley similar. Local reports note postmaster appointed at Ratner and the post office moved west four miles. Additional items cover threshing outfits, livestock trades, store expansion, and crop prospects across nearby farms.
Bill Dickinson former Nipawin reeve wins a Military Medal for conspicuous bravery at Amiens and is recommended for Arras. Charlie Wall of Pontrilas and siblings Joe Stewart and Geo. Scott are praised as faithful soldiers. Eddie Witmot dies, second Nipawin family loss in the war.
George P Jensen aged 71 died Saturday evening after a cancer illness. He moved to the Melfort district in 1906 from Minnesota and farmed in Eagle Lake country before moving to town about a year ago near the old creamery site. Survived by wife two sons Emmet and Harry and Mrs George Magnus all in Melfort district. Funeral Tuesday afternoon to Pleasant cemetery with Rev W Tanton officiating. Bearers listed: A Fennell J Fennell W H Jamesson C Rowe J Aikenhead.
