A memorial service honored Sel Dykstra with reflections on service over life, citing Christlike sacrifice for comrades and national freedom. Mrs L Cowie presided at the organ as hymns were sung and the service concluded with the National Anthem.
Citizens in Canada registered under No 8 must secure an action. The notice outlines required steps and deadlines for compliance.
Friends and relatives of soldiers overseas to send names and addresses to Mrs. B Steele, secretary of the O D E. Donations accepted at the armory on Tuesday afternoons or with Mrs. John Lee at the post office. An October 16 lecture by Mrs. Nellie McClung at the town hall, sponsored by the ICC E, promises a season highlight in Melfort.
Local notice lists a Victory Loan meeting in the town hall Friday at 8 and a Star City gathering Saturday at 8. It promotes Boris Hamburger concert for Red Cross funds on Tuesday October 15. James Watt of Star City reported 4400 bushels from 110 acres while 12 acres yielded over 700 bushels. H Newman of Melfort died at 2 AM after asthma attack, survived by wife and two daughters. Deceased moved from Beatty and was a carpenter. Thanksgiving services were held at All Saints and Beatty with the Archdeacon in attendance.
Flight Lieutenant Gerald Murphy writes to his parents about a near fatal crash while testing a scout aircraft near France. He describes the moment of loss of control, the tree collision, and his survival with minor injuries as the old bus disintegrated. Murphy mentions fellow airmen, training at Shorncliffe and London, and a meeting with a squire and his daughter after the incident.
The L O D E Donation Day records donations from numerous contributors. Items include boxes of gum chocolate bars tobacco and cakes with several donors giving cash amounts ranging up to five dollars. Names appear throughout such as Miss Moon Mrs Fred Ashdown Mrs J Gibb Mrs Aikenhead and Miss Mellor among others.
Names and prices appear for items sold by Mrs. W Clif Mrs W Tait and Mrs S J Greenwood including gum chocolate and cake with small sums like 5.00 and 2.00 noted for sales by Mr. Cromarty and Mrs. Monsees.
Jimmy Higgins sold his arm southeast of town to the same party who pursued it last spring. Higgins plans to move into town for the winter. Pleasant Valley ignored a misrouted consignment of O Be Joyful that lay unclaimed at the station for weeks. Investigation found the consignment logged over $0.00 of grog and intended for Pleasant Valley Alberta. it was seized by provincial police.
From Sept 30 1917 to Sept 30 1918 the Melfort Red Cross grew in strength both financially and in membership. Sixty new life members joined, with fifty four annual members paying two dollars or more and 24 associate members at one dollar. Six shipments to Regina included 361 socks 55 pajamas 90 shirts 2 gowns 42 pillow cases 138 handkerchiefs 8 towels 30 PP bags 3 scarfs 1 sweater 12 face cloths 5 Christmas stockings valued at 602.80 dollars. Four workers Mrs J Lee Miss F Lee Mrs Slimn and Mrs W W Mansell are praised for steady work. The teas are discontinued but rooms remain open Thursdays for sewing or knitting with two machines available. Officers were elected for the coming year.
The fowl supper and sale of work advertised to be held on Thanksgiving Day has been postponed for a couple of weeks. The meeting now to start at 2 p m will set a new date and make necessary arrangements. The financial report will be read at this meeting.
Melfort elevators and local sidings are full, delaying threshing. Pleasant Valley faces serious shortages as the C N R fails to provide adequate transport. G B Johnston MLA has pressed the railway and grain commissions, but relief seems unlikely. Rooming houses in Melfort are fully booked for travelling public.
The 1918 19 officers were elected led by President Mr Allan McFadden. Acknowledgments list gifts from J Neville A McFadden George Hill and South Star district. Numerous donors and rewards noted including raffled cake $55, crocheted collar ham handbag rocking chair milk signatures flags quilts and plants. A Tag Day plan was approved and parcels for overseas servicemen were organized.
