First Cold Snap Of The Season 18 Deg Below

The district endures the first real cold snap of the season with temperatures plunging to 18 degrees below zero. Tuesday saw slight climbs but the day finished with 16 below as sun failed to lift the chill. Local garages report high demand as frost bites cars and residents cope with the stiff winter air.

Star City Red Cross Plans New Year Ball and Donations

Star City Red Cross held a special meeting on December 1 in Red Cross rooms. A Provincial branch letter thanked the Star City group for 451.33 and 8000 to the British Red Cross from Our Day. Life memberships were conferred on Mrs. F Reynolds and Mrs. W Andrus. A ball at Gaiety Hall on New Year’s Eve was planned with grand march at o'clock. Guests included returned soldiers and a reception committee listed with several names. Decorations and committees were appointed, donations for cakes and butter invited, a Christmas cake raffle to night, and card tables arranged for non dancers. Tea room hostesses and church ladies served December events. Earlier collections yielded 1.25 and 10.40 on November 23 and 1st.

Melfort District Tops Canada Victory Loan Subscriptions

The Victory Loan drive in the Melfort district finished strong with over subscription by a small margin. Melfort and Prince Albert led the district, raising a combined total exceeding the $1,000,000 allotment with 442 subscribers averaging $442.71 each. Local banks processed $113,900 from 191 applications, while canvassers added $86,200 from 251 applications.

Scotty Speed Dies of Wounds in War Casualty List

Pte Alexander Speed, known as Scotty, of the Melfort platoon in the 158th Battalion, has died from wounds after being reported wounded in last week’s casualty list. A plumber by trade, he served as a firet cam lineman before enlisting and was praised by former employers for his steady, reliable work. He joined in spring 1914 and rose from lance corporal to ranks before heading to France. His cheerful presence made him well liked in Melfort, where he will be missed.

Local Orchestra Formed in Melfort Under Merle Hill

The Melfort community forms a fleer-plase orchestra led by Merle Hill. The four piece group includes Clarionet Merle Hill violln Jas Fraser cornet J Kraeliog piano and possibly drums. Local clubs seeking talent are urged to use home musicians.

Town Dads Establish Record For Brevity

Town council session held in Solicitor Stewarts office due to a bezsar in progress lasted exactly three quarters of an hour. Mayor Mansell and five councilors attended. Engineer Connor’s salary increase was laid over. Water plant pumped 33414 gallons daily. electricity cost 2.48 per kilowatt. Sewer and water connections for the season completed. well work by Sept McLauchlan expected to yield ample water. Government sanitary inspector praised the town’s sanitation. After adjournment, members went to the movies with Mayor elect Moore.

High School Literary Society Debates On Peace View

The Melfort High School Literary Society met Friday in a lively session. A debate on whether three years of peace outweigh the last three years of war was won by the affirmative with Harold Fennell Gladys Clearwater and Percy Bennett opposing Flo Nevieon Alice and Mabel in the negative.

The Unionist executive committee secured rooms in the Dawson MacEwen block and plans public openings. Quiet Methodist wedding joins Gwendoline Whiting and Frank Harris

Miss Gwendoline Whiting of Pleasant Valley became Mrs Frank Harris of Melfort at a Tuesday afternoon ceremony at the Methodist parsonage conducted by Rev W Big Uanton. Attendants were Miss May Minaker and groom’s man Clare Harris. They will reside six miles south of town.

Clapton Red Cross Forms Auxiliary at Clapton School

A Clapton Red Cross auxiliary was organized at Clapton School on December 3 with Rev C Barnes of Melfort assisting. Officers elected include President Mrs Klein and 1st Vice President Mrs Branten. An executive committee features Mrs Torger Olson, Mrs John Scott, Mrs Chapman, Mrs Douglas, and others. A meeting at Mrs Carwardine’s home on December 14 will host a ten cent tea.

Bazaar And Fowl Supper Realizes 472 Dollars

The Methodist Ladies Aid annual Bazaar and Fowl Supper held at the town hall on Monday was a great success. A total of 472 dollars and 60 cents was realized from efforts across a fancy work booth candy booth plain sewing booth and other booths. Local attendees reported strong support and good sales.

Oddfellows Organize A Social Club

Melfort Lodge No 30 I O U P F held nominations and elections for next term with J P G E A O'Brien as master and Thos McCosh as grand master. Officers for the club include Hon. Pres H E Reddy President E A O'Brien and Vice President O J Pollock. A light luncheon followed and plans to furnish the Odd Fellows Hall ante room for the Triple Link club were discussed. The next lodge meeting and club election follow Thursday evening with good attendance urged.
