The Carlisle Democracy reports a case at the Cumberland Quarterly Sessions Commonwealth v Doctor Waggoner. A consumptive patient paid twelve dollars and twenty five cents after a sham spiritual cure, salt and bread, and funeral shroud theatrics. The court directed the jury, verdict not guilty, costs taxed.
A tale from a frosty morning reveals a husband who, after drinking and quarrels, stops by Dr. Bone’s and recalls how his wife’s tender care kept him sober. He finally resolves to embrace total abstinence, guided by her warmth and patience. The narrative notes they lived and died practicing total abstinence from intoxicating drink.
