Edmonton reports Premier William Aberhart signaled a fall Legislature session to revisit investigations into construction costs on the Edmonton-Wetaskiwin and Jasper highways. Opposition and insurgent members pressed for public accounts scrutiny, while Aberhart cautioned against a rushed inquiry at session end.
Mayor Daniel J. Shields urged Roosevelt to intervene in the Johnstown steel strike as a dynamite blast damaged Bethlehem Steel premises and residents fled in fear. James M. Hess was kidnapped and dumped from a car, with a $5000 reward posted for his captors.
A London dispatch reports a substitute for the National Defence contribution will tax profits at up to five percent for five years from April 1, 18d. It excludes professions and covers all trades and businesses. The proposal follows withdrawl after opposition. In Nice a horse at a Rotary meeting caused a carriage crash, killing a woman and injuring twelve.
British holders of Alberta bonds were urged by J. Davidson of the British Empire Trust to refuse assent to a 50 percent interest reduction. He told trust members to await a government in Alberta willing to conform to proper procedure.
In La Pallice harbor mutinous sailors aboard the Spanish destroyer Ciscar trained guns on a French sloop as British and French warships formed lines of battle. The Bulldog and Fougueux joined Epinal and Dubourdieu in facing the Ciscar while 116 Bilbao refugees remained aboard. An officer later said the crew was quieting down.

The Alberta branch of the Canadian Legion adopts a resolution urging the Federal government to assume full responsibility for unemployment among ex servicemen. The convention protests lack of work for returned men on the Jasper Lake Louise highway project and calls for local War Veterans Assistance committee selection. A tax on export nickel to fund free medical treatment for all ex servicemen was not adopted.
The King and Queen were involved in a minor crash at Ascot when the Royal landau touched a railing as it turned off the course before the first race. The King was seen smiling and explaining the incident to the Queen.
His Honor Captain J. C. Bowen, Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, arrives in Medicine Hat at 11.55 on Wednesday June 23 for an official visit. He will be welcomed by Mayor Bullivant, lunch, then open the 1937 Stampede and Race Meet at the Exhibition Grounds. Aide de camp will be Major R. Lindsey.
German nationals born in 1917 in Canada must register with the nearest German consul by July 21 for active military service. Consul C. G. Kropp in Toronto said those registered would depart for Germany as a group and noted British subjects among the nationals must register for labor service. The Turkish government reported over 6,000 Kurdish rebels killed or wounded in Dersim suppression.
Saskatchewan crops face near-certain destruction without rains and cooler weather. Hon. George Spence warns that about 7,000,000 acres, half the province’s wheat, are in imminent danger as pastures and livestock suffer. The drought prompts Ottawa to extend a salvage program aiding 30,000 cattle and 40,000 lambs moved to eastern Canada.
Premier Aberhart said Alberta will present a detailed road construction plan to the Federal Labor Department to obtain an unemployment relief agreement. Works Minister Fallon said Ottawa will not share costs without 50 percent relief rolls, complicating road projects for those not on relief.
Dr. W S Caldwell secretary of the prepayment committee told a service club that medical services by prepayment cost less than a package of cigarettes daily for a five person family. The Ontario Medical Association has organized and launched a health insurance scheme.
The German Airways Corporation said regular air freight service to the United States will not begin until 1938. Chairman Georg Von Stauss announced trans-Atlantic trial flights would resume in August and regular service is planned for 1938.
Paris dispatch reports the Radical Socialist group backed Premier Leon Blum’s emergency powers 24 to 11, amid Communist abstention and threats of a Popular Front crisis. The government seeks to raise 5 billion francs by decree before July 31, with further tax and finance reforms planned to restore stability and defend public credit.
Mrs. Eunice V. Anderson, 27, was fatally burned when a fire destroyed the family home near Spring Coulee. Harold Anderson, her husband, carried her and their three small children to safety. she died at Cardston hospital after the blaze late Tuesday. The children escaped injury.
Seventy work horses shipped from Winnipeg to Alberta provincial roads were found in Edmonton. Fifty remain at the CN R stockyards in North Edmonton awaiting instructions from MP Eric Poole. Twenty are already used on a road project west of the city, with twenty more to Ponoka. Ownership and authority are disputed amid calls for a highway inquiry.
