Battleship Jaime Primero Wrecked in Explosion

Eighteen sailors were killed and 100 wounded in a mysterious explosion aboard the Spanish government battleship Jaime Primero at Cartagena. The vessel, sister to the Espana, carries eight 12 inch guns and was launched in 1914. Defence Minister Indalecio Prieto departed for Cartagena after the blast.

Mackenzie King Visits Dundee Highlighting Ancestral Ties

Trail Smelter Fumes Study by International Tribunal

The fumes from Trail B C smelter crossing into Washington will be studied by an international tribunal in Washington. Judicial inquiry ordered to air highway cost charges

Edmonton June 18 A judge of the Alberta Supreme Court will inquire into the costs of construction on the Edmonton Westakiwin and Jasper highways amid relief funds and alleged maladministration. The Legislature ordered the probe as prorogation approached with federal auditors reportedly reviewing costs. The move followed political bargaining between the Liberal government and insurgent leaders over how to proceed.

Canada’s Oldest Man John Birch Dies in Nipissing

John Birch, believed Canada’s oldest man, died today at his Nipissing junction home near Réke in his 115th year. A Crimean War veteran, he celebrated his 114th birthday on June 3. Born in Russia, he came to Canada at age 43 in a six week sail boat journey. His death leaves Nipissing district honors to Simon Commando, a 110 year old former Nipissing Indian reserve chief.

Montreal artist arrested for hammer killing at grave

Charles E. Herd, 36, a commercial artist, was arrested after a 36 hour vigil beside his mother's grave. He says he stood by the grave since Wednesday afternoon and now faces arrest for the hammer killing of Mrs. Elizabeth Armstrong, mother of seven. The arrest followed his staggered return home.

Alberta Legislature Prorogued Amid Social Credit Rift

Edmonton June 18 The Alberta legislature prorogued with 55 Social Credit members backing Major C H Douglas in monetary reform. James Hansen the Taher MLA expelled from the party last winter stood apart. Six insurgent leaders, including ex Aberhart allies, avoided pledges to the economic planning committee and sent a letter to G F Powell instead.

London report states Sir James Barrie has become very grave with bronchial pneumonia in a nursing home. The famed playwright and creator of Peter Pan is listed as critically ill in an official bulletin released early today.
