In Clarensdale Mississippi on December 29 a clash between eleven Negroes and a sheriff’s posse hunting three farmhands who gunned down W. E. Kirk and L. D. Kessey left two Negroes dead and three wounded. A posse member in charge of hounds was seriously hurt.
Libby Montana December 29. Prospectors plan a summer search for the Wolf Creek lost mine located about forty miles east of Libby in a rough uninhabited mountain country. The mine was allegedly found by James Pelling over twenty five years ago but a rockslide buried the workings and rumors say three prospectors were killed by Indians years later.
Irvine residents enjoyed a festive Friday evening December 23 with an all ages program at the school. Children performed songs recitations and dialogues then Santa Claus distribution of presents concluded the holiday gathering.
Alderman elect M. A. Brown reports irrigation lacking at the flat and growing nettlers daily while the local land office stays busy. Homesteads near town are scarce beyond 30 to 40 miles north. The Board of Trade is active with plans for Hollowware and Ferraccotti plants and Clay Products running day and night. Iron and steel mills, a big touring IT, and about 100 workers are noted. A $75,000 High School building nears completion and street paving progresses. The city plans a second high pressure water plant upstream. Conditions suggest a prosperous year ahead.
Mrs. McLeod left for Lethbridge for Christmas holidays. Mr. Harvey went to Winnipeg for the season. Mr. Searles returned from a midwestern trip and reports brisk business with the American Grain Separator Company line. Attendance at church was small due to Xmas travel.
The Boy Scouts committee met at the English Church School to select khaki uniforms from Price-Jones Co Calgary at five dollars each. Each boy pays for his outfit and may wear it after passing the second class exam at week’s end. The group plans an upcoming entertainment and names a committee of Mullen and scoutmasters to handle the program. A Vestry meeting at St Barnabas will be asked for permission to use the Indian school as headquarters for the Medicine Hat Company.
The second annual bankuet of the Sons of England will be held this evening in the Royal Hotel at 9 o clock.
An adjourned meeting in the City Council Chamber with full attendance adopted a rescission on Malcolm's Western Canneries resolutions and referred spur-track petitions to Public Works. It approved a $10 per meeting Alderman pay plan for 1911, and a $74.72 tax rebate for Fatt on city industrial sites.
A lively Christmas program for children was held at the J H Amos home in Seven Persons on the 97th inst with Mrs J H Amos and Claude E Ward as organizers. A large audience enjoyed readings recitations songs and a Santa visit with about a hundred attendees and festive gifts. The event highlighted the Presbyterian Sunday school progress since spring and prompted plans for a future venue.
Dresmland Theatre management offers the orchestra for the Tennis Club dance on January 2. The menu features Brussel Sprouts Caglidewer Tomatoes and Radishes, first of the season, in splendid condition. Order early as supplies won’t last. contact B. B. New Orleans reports a Honduran revolution with fighting along the Nicaragua border near Cape Gracias and Cape Caracas. General Lee Christmas, described as an American adventurer, allegedly leads about 1600 troops with 40 days’ provisions toward Ceibana, while Gen Bonilla counterattacks Cefbana from Puerto Cortes with the gunboat Hornet defending the port.
Oakhurst hosts a newly organized Farmers Association with C. L. Wesley as chairman and Jas Carter as secretary treasurer. Farmers seek state support to create an improvement district to repair local roads west of the 4th meridian. The community anticipates a new school building and a post office, with Rev A J Nash to preach at a local residence on Christmas Day.
Mr W L Stewart presents Miss Leah Stoddard and her company in Stephen's and Linton's merry musical mix up My Wife's Family at the Marshall and Hunter Opera House tonight. Stoddard is a highly favored actress in this city and will appear as the Wife with new gowns.
R. O. McNeelie, district passenger agent for CPR Calgary, in the city today. Christmas turkeys in New Westminster BC sold from 0 to 35 cents a pound with extra large birds fetching as high as 600 dollars each.
News from Many Berrins details road work by government graders across Many Berries Creek, a hot Monday, coal hauling by Dana O Connell, and visits at Pioneer Store. James Carter elected chairman of a busy Oak-hurst district school group with E H Davies as secretary treasurer. Reports cover home building, logging, stock loss, and local trades from Cypress Hills to Cypress Hill district and Seven Persons.
The public school hosted a Christmas entertainment with bunting, two decorated trees, refreshments, and a program of choruses and recitations followed by a Santa Claus distribution. Minor disturbance occurred over a present. Rev. Hench preached a Christmas sermon and announced a January service and church meeting. Town notices mention holidays, visitors, a Cecil restaurant dance, and local bricklayers taking Christmas at home.
Walter Barrington pleaded guilty to unlawfully obtaining ten dollars from C H Davidson of Redcliff after a spree and a debit to his former employers Redcliff Mannufacturing Co. He was jailed for two months with hard labor. Capt. Parker and J P S T Hopper presided at the hearing. Barrington had been employed as bookkeeper until December 16. He was arrested Tuesday by Constable Smith.
Six men will pilot a new airship proposed by Jos. from Verde Islands toward Trinidad seeking a March or April crossing. The craft would carry a six member crew and use a spray system from the envelope top to mitigate fog loss. It would have 100 horsepower engines and an unsinkable lifeboat, aiming to reach the target in four to five days aloft guided by favorable winds.
