A thousand London police and Scots Guards surround Sydney Street in a siege over the Houndsditch murder. Police report two officers shot, a roof collapse fires the building, and an anarchist attacker is driven back by rifle fire amid a fierce blaze.
Boston reports Henry M. Whitney endorses U S Senator Lodge amid a political clash with Governor-elect Foss. Whitney notes the next Senator must represent the people, not State Street, and cites reciprocity as sending capital to Canada, hindering New England industry and ports, with a call to end Lodge’s term.
In Bancroft Ontario on January 3 W A Red dick of Carlaw township near Fort Stewart started a fire and went back to bed. His seven year old daughter was playing near the stove when her clothing caught fire and she died shortly after from the burns.
J B Brayne of Claresholm arrives in the city to open Western Canada Lumber Co yards on the Road Allowance south of the flour mills at King Street corner. A company notice appears in another column. A late evening service at Memorial Evangelical Church featured a sermon by Pastor Daum on I Sam 3.
The Sunday morning sermon based on Joshua 3 4 urged looking upward to God in history and forward to greater things. It called for divine guidance in new paths, closer union with God in affliction, watch and prayer without ceasing, and readiness for new duties, privileges, and a potential new life. The evening service planned evangelistic sessions to run through the week.
Ottawa reports Finance Minister Fielding and Customs Minister Patterson will depart to Washington to negotiate a trade agreement. Terms must be reported to the Canadian Government, then ratified by Parliament. The arrangement is expected to ease progress and gain approval.
A frozen body found in a gravel pit north of Salt Lake City proved to be Allan McGregor of Montreal an advertising man. Letters indicate he poisoned himself and went to the pit to die. He was separated from his wife in Australia a sealed letter is addressed to her.

A Vigo dispatch reports the Valenca da Menzo garrison in Portugal has been confined to barracks by an order from Lisbon and told to be ready to move immediately. The alert reflects heightened tensions and potential mobilization in the region.

Granville New York’s business district burned, three hundred thousand dollars lost. Oliver Eminet and family perished in Bristol Nova Scotia fire, and Paul Phee and sister Catherine died in a dwelling blaze in Charlottetown, with more fatalities and suffocation cited.
Winnipeg ends a street railway strike after days of disruption. Municipal authorities and workers reach an agreement, restoring service and easing commuting woes for residents. No further details available.
