Power hungry thieves sweep Snohomish copper wire

In Washington state scrap metal thieves, emboldened by high copper prices, stole more than 600 metres of wire from three locations in Snohomish County after snowstorms began November 26. Utility officials warn lines can still be live and fatalities have occurred in similar thefts elsewhere.

Deer victims in two Trans-Canada collisions near Dunmore and Range Road 90

Redcliff RCMP responded to two weekend deer versus car crashes on the Trans-Canada Highway. Friday at about 6 p.m. a eastbound vehicle near Dunmore hit a deer with damage to the car and no injuries. Sunday around 5:30 p.m. another vehicle near Range Road 90 struck a deer, again with driver unharmed and only vehicle damage.

Patrols lead to suspensions in Redcliff

Regular weekend patrols by Redcliff RCMP resulted in two 24 hour road suspensions. At about 10 30 p m Friday a driver was stopped and charged with operating a motor vehicle without a licence. A second 24 hour suspension was issued at 3 a m Monday after a driver was observed moving at a very slow speed and stopped.

Alberta man pleads not guilty in dog cruelty case

Daniel Charles Haskett, 19, faces charges of injuring or endangering an animal and causing unnecessary suffering after allegedly dragging his family’s pet dog to its death behind a car. In a separate proceeding at the same courthouse, Denny Stabenow faced mischief charges following a protest outside Haskett’s initial appearance.

NFU backs CWB single desk sales in director vote

Stewart Wells of the National Farmers Union says farmers largely favored the Canadian Wheat Board single desk selling in last CWB director elections. He notes only 20 percent of eligible voters supported the federal stance. Four single desk supporters were elected in the five odd numbered districts. An investigator bags evidence in Hamburg amid Litvinenko poison traces found in an apartment linked to a contact.

Ontario declines tobacco lawsuit join six provinces

Premier Dalton McGuinty said Ontario will not fund a multibillion-dollar lawsuit against the tobacco industry. He favored delaying the effort, preferring ongoing anti smoking programs and watching developments in British Columbia. Ontario will let six other provinces push forward while focusing on education to help smokers quit.

Gaza gunmen kill officer's sons in drive by shooting

In Gaza City gunmen killed three sons of a Palestinian security officer in a drive by shooting that left more than 60 bullets in their car. The attack signals possible escalation between Fatah and Hamas as intelligence officials blame Hamas. The officer had helped crack down on Hamas a decade earlier and was not in the vehicle.

CPR Holiday Train Brings Gifts and Cheer to Medicine Hat

Hundreds of Hatters welcomed the CPR Holiday Train pulling into Medicine Hat for the eighth year. The event raised 4000 lbs of food and over 5000 dollars for the local food bank, with 1567.25 dollars in cash donations from guests. Mayor Vallely and MLA Len Mitzel attended as Wide Mouth Mason and Lisa Brokop entertained, while Santa drew the loudest cheers.
