Printing Office Melodies and Notices in Maumee Express
A historic Maumee Express issue prints poems by the late poet Lamor Otin Rockwell, notes his Boston-era life, and details a Providence benefactor who once sheltered him. It recounts a failed Mount Auburn subscription and includes a printery melody and office verses reflecting 1830s printing culture and economic hardship.

Ill fated Ben Sherrod steamboat disaster at New Orleans
An eyewitness account recalls the May 5 1837 departure of the Ben Sherrod from New Orleans loaded with cotton and passengers. A fire broke out on the upper deck as the steamer neared the Homochitto bar, flames spreading amid drunken firemen, passengers leaping into the river, and heroic rescues by the Columbus and Statesman as crews battled to save lives. The survivor describes mothers protecting children and the terrifying final moments before the wreck drifted away, with two sisters and a brother lost and Captain Dougharty blamed for the catastrophe.
