Ohio farmer idealized as path to prosperity and honor
A 1838 editorial urges Ohio youth toward farming over professional pursuit, arguing agricultural success supports towns, banks, and the state. It lauds Old Joe Vance and farmer-leaders, claiming land wealth and civic stature await industrious growers rather than lawyers or merchants.

The General's Pew and a Yorkshire Courtship Tale
A fragmentary reminiscence follows a narrator recalling a country church pew once belonging to Gen Lyle of Elms, his family, and a faded romance with Sybil Lyle. The piece weaves memory, marriage, exile, and a distant divorce, ending with social scenes and aging figures at Elms and in town.
