Fort Tract and Catfish Smith in early recollections
In a fragmentary reminiscence, the piece narrates the rise of Catfish Smith as a reformer mayor of the Port Tract, his squatter-era surroundings, and the transformation of river shores into a lively landscape. It blends satirical history with an account of family lineages, property battles, and local power dynamics, ending with a scene of public notices and political commentary.

Ohio railroad route debate from lower Sandusky to Perrysburg
The piece argues against placing the rail line termination at lower river points, warning that ice and river width would hinder winter travel and force crossings on the south bank. It stresses the Ohio railroad’s westward link from New York to the Mississippi and urges choosing a direct, practical route to benefit stockholders and national wealth.
