Tinley Park Breaks Ground On 60000-Square-Foot Convention Center
Tinley Park officials break ground today for a 60,000 square foot convention center on 90 acres near I-80 and Harlem. The 3 p.m. ceremony at 183rd Street and Sayre Avenue includes a reception at the police department and presentation of plans. The project, a TIF district, freezes property taxes up to 23 years to spur growth, with a heli pad planned near the center and a Holiday Inn hotel and 300 homes adjoining the site. Mayor Ed Zabrocki touts the milestone as Tinley Park wakes the sleeping giant amid regional growth and studies backing feasibility. Trustee Patrick Rea notes proximity to the I-80 corridor and industrial activity. Opponent Ken Fulton warns of private capital risk and tax impacts on districts and residents.
