Cook County to tax use on cars in 1996 budget plan
County Board President John Stroger proposed a 0.75 percent use tax on cars boats and other big ticket items to balance a 22 billion ledger without raising property taxes. The plan would raise about 26 million annually though dealers caution collection may be weak.

Dutch Round Table brings Hollanders together to share heritage
Ettema, a South Holland historian, forms a group for Dutch heritage lovers and others to discuss early Dutch settlers. The meetings, led by Ettema with Dorothy Fennema and Joan Mel, gather 25 locals monthly at the South Holland Public Library.
