Matteson voters will decide two questions on Nov 4 to fund a 100 acre recreation complex. Bonds up to 15 million would finance the park center ice and outdoor facilities with 20 year repayment at up to 9 percent. Carrie Napoleon Matteson reports village officials accuse landowner Melvin Hoger of knowing his 80 acres along Lincoln Highway could be used for a future community park. Parks director Jim Sharp says the site was chosen months ago and that permission was granted to conduct initial testing. Hoger says the land was not for sale then and only the back 40 acres might be considered, with the Lincoln Highway parcel not for sale.
Richton Park considers joining several south suburban towns in adopting the Illinois municipal telecom infrastructure maintenance fee to replace the old franchise or license model. The board discussed pros and cons of a measure taking effect January 1, 1998 and slated for a vote Monday. University Park previously passed a similar ordinance to offset anticipated state cuts, with village officials citing a model IMF draft as the basis for the maintenance fee to replace franchise agreements with telecom carriers except cable firms.
Michelle Sharpe, 24, of Matteson, died after her southbound car crossed the centerline and struck a northbound truck on Torrence Avenue in the 20700 block around 2 p.m. She was extricated and pronounced dead at St James Hospital Chicago Heights.
Nine candidates compete for two Prairie State College Board of Trustees seats on November 4. Former PSC leader James H. Griffith and Chicago Heights alderman Robert McCoy are among nine hopefuls. several are PSC Foundation members. Incumbents Flora Ciarlo and Oliver Alexander not seeking reelection. Steve Schurch has withdrawn.
