Matteson Police Chief Lawrence Brunson said a two man tactical unit patrolled Woodgate last week at residents’ complaints. The effort, joined by a Multi jurisdictional Task Force from Matteson Richton Park Park Forest and Olympia Fields, yielded seven arrests for various charges led by Jeremiah T. Lee 17 of 145 Briarwood Court Matteson. The gang suppression unit found no incidents during duty and the department plans further patrols only when manpower and timing allow.
Matteson police charged two men with burglary in two separate incidents this week. Christo C. Harms, 31, of 235 East 148th Street, was jailed on a felony burglary count for breaking into Matteson Elementary School. A second suspect, Daniel A. Demkowicz, 39, of Covert Motel, was charged after the Covert Lounge was burglarized again, with $40 taken from a coffee can. Police say a broken window entry tied to both cases and fingerprints at the lounge aided the investigation.
Trustees in Richton Park discussed raising minimum living space for homes and apartments. Assistant Village Manager Chris Limas outlined proposed increases by unit type, with current standards at 600 sq ft in R-3 and 500 sq ft in R-4, not covering single family attached units. The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing and recommended change, with the matter returning to work session for further review.
Edna Lee filed a complaint alleging Matteson officers publicly stripped her 17 year old son Jeremiah Lee during a search for a handgun after he resisted and swore at police. Police chief Lawrence Burnson said officers acted to protect themselves and Lee, who was charged with obstructing a peace officer on Oct 7.
Seven communities including Flossmoor Homewood Olympia Fields and Matteson join in funding a two year project to secure upstream land for Butterfield Creek watershed. Richard D Mariner will consult on land use and flood control while erosion measures are recommended and a $200000 grant supports critical flood control properties.
Police investigate a pair of 26 year old men who say masked gunmen abducted them outside a Country Club Hills home and drove them to I 57 near 99th Street where they were shot while attempting to escape. Both victims, injured in the legs and arms, were found by a state trooper and treated at Christ Hospital Oak Lawn. The incident would be the suburb’s first carjacking of the year if verified.
