MEG Funding Strains Suburban Drug Enforcement Network

MEG relies on funding from suburban police departments and state police, with a $2 million appropriation under pressure. Some agencies pay a base plus per capita fee while state police contribute a fixed amount, about 1.3 million, unchanged since MEG’s 1978 creation. Palmer notes concerns that raising MEG funds could shift budgets elsewhere and that state police avoid MEG duties. MEG’s lone successes include a 1991 Erdogan Kurap case and the South Suburban Initiative, though participation dwindles as local departments switch to federal programs or pull personnel. Officials seek legislative action ahead of veto session. Governor Edgar plans no supplemental signing before leaving office.
