Route 30 widening protests to be considered

State officials will take under advisement protests and suggestions from Olympia Fields residents affected by the Route 30 widening from Chicago Heights to Matteson. An informational meeting drawn more than 100 residents was held by IDOT, with disputes over why only Olympia Fields lies in the construction path. Richard Small, acting village president, deferred further questions to next month’s village board meeting. Kenneth Macander of IDOT stressed the meeting served as a public input event, noting suggestions from Chicago Heights were considered. Residents demanded reopenings of the 1970s hearings, while Kaysen and Benz urged clearer notices and compensation plans from IDOT for property taken. The project, conceived in 1970 and briefly shelved in the 70s, revived this fall with new funds following the Crosstown expressway project cancellation.
