Illinois moves to deregulate electric utilities statewide
The General Assembly sent Gov. Edgar a landmark deregulation bill to open Chicago’s Commonwealth Edison and Illinois utilities to competition. It aims to cut residential, commercial, and industrial rates by letting customers pick their providers starting in 2002, with switching fees to cover stranded costs. The measure passed heavily in both chambers with bipartisan support and includes provisions on nuclear plant depreciation and a state task force study due by January 1999.
