Prairie State College voters approved a tax levy increase to 23 cents per $100 of valuation, up from 12 cents, funding education and building needs. The 4,585 yes to 3,514 no result will finance staff growth and program stability, with careful budgeting ahead.
Illinois Central Gulf will receive 36 Highliner commuter cars by November with 30 old ICG cars kept for potential reuse. The first Highliner ships to Woodcrest May 27 or 28, then displays at Union Station during an RTA aided exhibit for a rapid transit conference June 5 to 8.
Inside magazine profiles rising interest in aviation in the far south and southwest suburbs. It highlights schools offering flight instruction and honors a pioneer of aviation in the area.

Carole Jannik resigns from Prairie State College board effective May 31 due to husband’s transfer to Arkansas. She served as policy committee chair and urged applicants for her replacement within two weeks. The board approved 30 day vacancy actions and discussed salaries, grants, and bids at the June meeting.
Matteson Elementary District 162 board plans nine special meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays through September to decide on closing a school and possibly reorganizing grades at Huth Upper Grades center. The district seeks community participation via open meetings and parent volunteers to visit other districts before June 9. An indoctrination session for volunteers will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the district administration center.
