Storm fells mature trees in Matteson
Storm tore through Matteson late Monday into Tuesday felling mature street trees. Estimates place loss between 10 and 20 percent with up to 3 foot diameter trees uprooted. District launches gifted summer institute for seventh graders
Rich Township High School District 227 starts a two week Summer Gifted Institute for incoming seventh graders. Led by the district gifted committee, the program aims to develop higher level thinking, tech use, and high school prep with topics in applied physics and math finance French biology and ecology. About 50 students are targeted from within the district boundaries meeting criteria such as above grade level in reading or math or teacher identified gifted status.

Gregory Randall, author of America's First GI Town Park Forest, will visit May 21 at 2:30 p.m. in Freedom Hall to sign copies of his history of the village.
