Trash on area highways shows costly upkeep and hardy plant plans
IDOT crews in six Chicago area counties battle litter along 3400 miles of expressways. Each weekday over 150 bags are collected on the Dan Ryan and Eisenhower with items ranging from fast food trash to refrigerators and even bodies. Between March and October last year about 50,000 bags of litter were removed. costs include dumping fees about 150,000 dollars yearly and labor. To cut maintenance, IDOT promotes prairie grasses and hardy trees like oaks and Catalpa, planting about 6 000 acres of shoulders and medians and finishing landscaping on I 80 with 400 trees and seed for grass and wildflowers.
