Townships face rising costs and scrutiny over general assistance
An analysis of Will and Cook County townships shows wide disparities in relief spending and administration costs. Thornton Township, the largest, spent 525000 on relief with 2623 recipients, while smaller townships incur higher overhead percentages. Officials debate efficiency versus local access, noting many seniors rely on township services and food pantries.
