Publics weigh value of family fest spending on foods rides and crafts against municipal costs for lighting Ferris wheels and staffing. Some suburbs expand festivals while others shrink due to high costs limited space and volunteers. Richton Park ends its annual Family Fest after dwindling crowds and mounting costs.
Richton Park will sponsor concerts in major community parks from June through September, said Kim Riddering, parks and recreation director. The shift aims to bring services to residents as attendance at Family Fest declined, with cost a major factor in ending the event.
Richton Park aims to reopen the former Lakewood Pool this summer after trustees reviewed an Ad Hoc Pool Committee plan. Chairman Paul Libbey outlined a 40 463 dollar operating budget with 41 825 projected income, based on memberships and a six week Rich Township camp for about 100 children. The plan includes ADA ramp upgrades, gutters and lighting repairs, portable toilets, and seeking ADA grants. a temporary ramp will be installed this summer, with a concrete ramp next year. The board plans a Monday vote on the measures.
The Eastern Will County Regional Council seeks support for a Governors Trail from Kankakee to Lincoln Mall in Matteson. Planner Craig Hullinger estimates a $5 million cost, noting roughly $100,000 per mile and potential increases with expanded scope. Project planning by the council depends on further developments.
Six high schools and three districts showcased student research on South Suburbs at Rich East High School. Projects covered local prairie studies and a debate on a third airport, funded by a $225,000 technology literacy grant and presented via charts graphs and PowerPoint to officials and peers.
