Rails Rice Objects To Public Funds For Crossing Upgrades
Rails Rice said the city objects to using tax money for crossing improvements, warning funds for other safety projects could be diverted. Across the region grade crossing crashes fell 67 percent from 1988 to 1999 despite whistle bans, showing safety programs’ effectiveness. Colette Wagner, near a crossing, says train whistles have grown louder over a decade, harming quality of life. Federal hearings roll through May, with a final rule possibly in effect by early 2001.
