Matteson man held in Crete attack
Anthony J. Zackery of 141 Briarwood Court is jailed on $1 million bond, charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and robbery after allegedly raping, terrorizing and robbing a 64 year old Crete woman April 22. The attack lasted about 3 hours, ending with police finding cash and belongings missing, and the victim hospitalised at St James Hospital in Chicago Heights. Zackery was arrested April 27 at his South Suburbs job.

Pickup truck crash claims driver's life
A Steger man, Joseph W. Boyd, 32, was killed when his pickup struck a utility pole on Governors Highway near Sauk Trail. Police said he was northbound at high speed, went air borne, and was ejected after the 9:15 p.m. crash. He died of multiple injuries, the Cook County medical examiner reported.

GSU and state universities gain voting student board members
Illinois lawmakers advance noncontroversial bills to let student trustees vote on matters at all nine public universities including GSU Chicago State University and the University of Illinois system. Voting students would be chosen in campus elections and take effect July 1 2001.
