Village adopts fair housing rule in Hazel Crest
Hazel Crest village board approved an ordinance requiring affirmative marketing plans for new developments before building permits. The plan aims to attract a racially diverse buyer pool and inform whites of opportunities in minority areas as well as inform minorities of opportunities in majority areas. Enforcement relies on withholding permits or barring advertising until plans are approved. Trustee Robert Smith questioned constitutionality, while officials cite Supreme Court support for municipal fair housing powers.
