The public may tour this year’s south suburban Showplace home starting today. The Chicago Heights Tudor mansion is redecorated by the American Society of Interior Designers and patterned on a Thames river original.
Real estate activity in the south suburbs shows a strong start to the year with sales up 153 percent in the first quarter. Alvin Wagner Jr., a consultant and appraiser, cites the data as an early sign of economic recovery, per Real Estate Page 30.
The Richton Park village board unanimously approved a nearly 3 million budget for fiscal year 1983-1984. It forecasts property tax revenues of 559,412 for the new year, total revenues of 2,941,758, and expenditures of 2,474,527 plus 468,346 in CDBG funds for a grand total of 2,942,837. The plan excludes a 500,000 water system rehabilitation bond.
Four members of the Thorn Creek Nature Preserve Management Commission seek to free 4500 dollars held by Governors State University. The funds, earned from renting the Lawless house on preserve land, cannot be turned over to the commission due to legal and budget rules. Officials say the money should be used for woods development, but it remains tied to the university budget.
Richton Park village engineer Robert Matthey reported rapid progress on Sauk Trail emergency medical facility with completion by June 1 and quicker Sauk Trail widening and paving to Blackhawk drive. He urged discussion of the Sauk interconnection with Park Forest and noted final designs for off street parking, plus plans to fund drainage with federal funds.
The federal government unveiled 1.9 million dollars for flood control in Chicago south suburban communities within the Little Calumet Watershed project. Funds aim to accelerate program phases and may start reservoir construction by October 1, with additional money supporting earlier soil conservation efforts for the Markham-Harvey reservoir. Senator Percy asserts the project is essential as flooding continues, and officials note the early release avoids potential 1984 year start delays due to a Reagan administration ban.
