Parents Boycott Chicago Heights School Over Principal Shelved
Parents of more than 150 students at Garfield School in Chicago Heights pulled children from classes on Tuesday to protest the shelving of Principal Saul Herrera. The rally in English and Spanish ended with a march to St Paul Catholic Church where an alternative school was set up. District officials call the action ill advised as withholdings continue until the school board negotiates on concerns, including Herrera’s dismissal, with Amigos Hispanos and the Garfield PTA. Herrera, in his second year, is the first Hispanic principal at Garfield, whose student body is about 80 percent Hispanic. Herrera remains on administrative leave with full salary.
