Richton Park police start a weeklong check at village exits and east-side checkpoints during commuter hours from 6:30 to 9 a.m. to ensure residents display their automobile stickers. Residents without stickers will receive tickets for ordinance noncompliance.
The Matteson plan commission formally approves a mixed use project for Route 30 between I 57 and Cicero. Team Enterprises will finance and build a Holiday Inn style two story hotel, a six story atrium office building, five one story offices, a supermarket, drugstore, theater and several retailers along the southern border. The existing Woolco site will be reconfigured into three shops as the western anchor.
District 159 Elementary School District 159 voted Tuesday night to conduct another property tax survey in cooperation with the Rich Township assessor's office. Shirley Green praised the district for last year's effort that raised district assessment valuation by 1,016,642 dollars. The board also approved the 1979-1980 calendar of 181 instructional days plus four workshop days, with teachers starting August 31 and students September 4, and a holiday on January 15 for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For parent teacher conferences, November 2 and March 28 remain. A regular school board election is set for April 14.
Matteson public works chief Roy Jung says the new civil defense sirens will be tested for the first time Tuesday at 10 30 a m. Headds the devices will then be tested monthly on the first Tuesday of each month at 10 30 a m.
Richard N. Yaseen, south suburban jeweler and longtime Chicago Heights and Flossmoor business leader, died after a short illness. Services will be held at Temple Anshe Sholom in Olympia Fields at 11 a.m. tomorrow with visitation today. Interment at Beverly Cemetery Blue Island.
