Water birds return to Calumet despite Big Marsh loss
More than 800 endangered water birds are breeding near Lake Calumet after their Big Marsh nesting site was degraded. A new colony of black crowned night herons plus 40 great egrets nests about a mile southeast at Indian Ridge Marsh. Local officials call for active wetland management and possible draining to restore vegetation, with Waste Management assisting water control.
