Hazardous fumes traced to hospital trash compactor in Olympia Fields
Hazardous materials experts and Olympia Fields firefighters responded to St James Hospital after a security guard and seven staff members reported throat and eye irritation from unknown fumes. An enclosed garbage compacted waste was found as the source. the facility was sealed and ventilated, with no serious injuries. The Matteson Fire Department led the hazmat response, and hospital officials began an internal probe into waste procedures.
